Frank

Frank once was a simple human. But when other worlds began going wild, guardians were designed to watch over. Frank was a perfect candidate for that role

Childhood

Frank was born in a pretty normal family, in the countryside of France. His childhood was pretty calm with no bad incidents. Frank was a peaceful child, never making a tantrum, very serious at school, aspiring to become a scientist to "cure people".

Frank, at school, didn't have friends. No one hated or bullied him either, in fact, he was pretty much invisible. Silent, calm, and serious, he was any teacher's dream.

Outside of school, Frank was very curious. He would draw every new flower or insect he found, trying to study them, and finding beauty in the little things.

Teenage years

When Frank was about 14, his father started drinking. A lot. It started as just a few drinks at the bar after work, and spiralled down to drinking every day from sunrise to sunset. His drinking problem cost him his job, and Frank started being disgusted by his father. For the first time, he saw something he could not find beauty in.

This disturbed Frank greatly. He always had seen beauty in everything. Why was it different ? Slowly this question started eating him from the inside, and he stopped seeing beauty in things. He became bitter and gave up on his dream to become a scientist. Instead, when he turned 17 and had to decide what to study, Frank decided to study law to make more money instead.

When Frank was 18, he had started studying law and his father sadly passed away after years of alcohol abuse.

Adult life

After he finally graduated from law school, Frank became a pretty successful lawyer. However, he felt miserable. Money couldn't make him happy, neither could the women and men he slept with. He had lost his wonder and was aimless, just trying to make money. Because that's what people say success is. Maybe he just had to keep going ? To get richer ?

Frank started drinking too, it didn't fix anything, but the weight he carried felt lighter for a while.

One day, Frank's mom died. She had been stabbed by a robber. Frank inherited the house, and was ready to sell it. He didn't want to keep a constant reminder of what his father had become. A reminder that he was becoming an alcoholic just like his father was. A reminder of what used to be, of how good life was when he was just a kid with his mom and dad.

He still decided to go check inside one last time, to see if it had anything valuable or precious to take home before selling it.

And there he found it. His old notebook, full of flowers and bugs drawings, full of notes, full of wonder.

After that Frank decided to stop drinking, he had recovered his long lost whimsy and quit his job. He had enough money to live for a while and fix his life.

After a long time, Frank was happier. He had a girlfriend that he was happy with, a dog that he loved, a garden that he took care of and he was doing charity work at a local law firm.

World War II

When world war II started, Frank was drafted and had to go fight.

He promised his girlfriend he would be back, and went. He finally had a life he was happy with and he wasn't about to just go down without fighting.

He decided to only use weapons when he was in critical danger, trying as hard as he could to not kill if it isn't strictly necessary. And eventually that mindset cost him his life. He was shot in the neck and died. Or did he ? Even when bleed out on the floor, Frank kept seeing beauty in the world around him, beauty in death. And without really knowing how or why he woke up.

Becoming a guardian

He had woke up, sure, but ... Something felt off. He was now a skeleton, and his neck, the place he got shot in, was nowhere to be found. His skull, separated from the rest of his skeleton was floating. He heard a voice.

"Sorry about your ... Body. We're not used to bringing dead people back yet, we did our best."

Frank was confused. Where was this voice coming from ? Who were these people that "did their best" ?

"Frank. We have a mission for you. There are an infinite amount of universes, and we need to assign guardians to the important one. You will not be allowed to destroy or to stop humans from fighting and taking their own decisions. However, you will be able to create. We will grant you this power only asking in exchange that you stop humanity if it ever threatens other universes."

Frank didn't understood what was happening but he accepted. It was his chance to do good and help people, like he always wanted.

Nagasaki and Hiroshima

In 1945, bombs fell upon Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The first ever nuclear attack. Frank knew this would do damage the likes of which no one was ready for, but he couldn't stop them. He wasn't allowed to.

But he could imbue the bombs with fragments of his divine essence, planting within the destruction the seed of strange creation, not knowing himself what would happen.

When the atomic fire faded, it left behind not just ruin and destruction, but something else.

Each bomb gave rise to a being, a creature. Born from pure radiation, grief, and divine interference, these ghosts of radiation roamed the earth, drawn to one another. To some, they appeared as angels of death, radiating and killing life on their path. To others, they were mutated humans that somehow survived. Some even believed they were incarnations of gods that came to punish humanity for creating such weapons.

But to Frank, they were just like his children. He knew they would never know about them or use them but he gave them names. Frankie and Francine.
